Why does this joint keep hurting? Worn cartilage may be one cause, especially when the joint feels stiff or aches after use. A small damaged spot can also cause catching or swelling. Yet bone, muscle, or a tendon may hurt nearby. A scan shows damage, while an exam checks whether that damage matches your soreness.

Why does the joint ache more after some movements?

Long walks, stairs, deep bending, or repeated lifting may bring on soreness. The joint can feel stiff after you sit, then swell as the day goes on. A twist may cause sharp pain, catching, or a feeling that the joint won't hold you. Note the exact movement and the sore spot. Those details help the clinician compare your symptoms with the scan.

The scan shows damage, but it can't show what you feel.

What can I do for the soreness today?

Cut back the movement that causes swelling, but don't stop moving the joint altogether. Slowly bend and straighten it within a comfortable limit. Gentle exercises can help the muscles that support it. A cane or rail may steady you while walking. Use your usual pain medicine only if your doctor has said it is safe. Stop if the pain turns sharp or the joint locks.

Easy movement often feels better than a full day of rest.

When is the soreness worth an exam?

Arrange a visit when soreness keeps waking you or limits errands you normally manage. Bring the scan report and notes on when the aching began. Get prompt care if the joint locks, won't bear weight, or swells fast after an injury. A fever with a joint that is hot and swollen needs urgent care.

QC Kinetix offers a no-cost consultation and regenerative treatments, including PRP that clinicians make from your spun blood and place into the joint.

Carbon-14 bomb-pulse dating of tibial plateau cartilage from 23 people born between 1935 and 1997 showed that virtually no replacement of the cartilage collagen matrix happens after skeletal maturity, and that neither osteoarthritis nor tissue damage changed that turnover rate. This is the measurement behind the statement that adult articular cartilage has almost no capacity for self-repair.

In a meta-analysis of 63 studies covering 5,397 knees of 4,751 adults with NO symptoms and no injury, the pooled prevalence of cartilage defects on MRI was 24% (95% CI 15% to 34%), rising from 11% in adults under 40 to 43% in adults aged 40 and over. Meniscal tears were present in 10%, bone marrow lesions in 18% and osteophytes in 25%.

PALLIATIVE chondroplasty outnumbered marrow-stimulation repair by more than 2:1 and outnumbered restoration procedures (ACI, osteochondral autograft and allograft) by roughly 50:1, regardless of age, sex or region.

  4. The NIHR health technology assessment of autologous chondrocyte implantation reviewed the trials and built a new economic model. Survival analysis suggested better long-term results with ACI than microfracture, and in most analyses the incremental cost-effectiveness ratios for ACI versus microfracture fell within a range usually considered acceptable. The assessment flagged the absence of randomised data beyond five years, and that the long-term data come from forms of ACI now superseded.
